According to TechCrunch, many Indian telecom operators have been blocking its website since February 2022. VideoLan president and lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf said, “Most major ISPs [internet service providers] are banning the site, with diverse techniques.”

Telecoms have not stated why they have blocked the VideoLan.ORG website, but some theorize that it might be because a security alert from earlier this year was interpreted incorrectly.

Security company Symantec revealed in April of this year that the hacker group Cicada, which is linked to the Chinese government, was taking advantage of VLC Media Player and a number of other well-known programs to get remote access to the computers of its victims.

However, Symantec’s Security Threat Intelligence blog further mentions that the Hackers distributed a modified version of VLC to use it for triggering a custom malware loader. One of these tools is a modified version of the popular open-source media player, VLC.

Kempf claimed that no Indian government agency has contacted him or his company and that the restriction is likely the result of a misinterpretation of the Chinese security problem.
