Microsoft’s biggest update of the year is now available for download with build Windows 11 24H2. Although the public release in set for September 2024, 24H2 ISO build is already available for download right now and can be installed on your computer. The update is unofficially termed AI PCs, packs with tons of AI features including Copilot + Recall.

Microsoft’s upcoming major update for Windows 11, known as Windows 11 24H2, introduces a variety of new capabilities and enhancements. The highlight is the Copilot App, which allows users to interact with an AI model powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology. This app can be freely positioned on the screen and enables natural voice conversations, as well as integrations with Windows Context Copilot to process content from any window, and a Power Automate Plugin for local task automation.

Microsoft Copilot+ PCs are a new class of Windows 11 PCs that are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series processors. These PCs are designed to accelerate productivity and creativity by leveraging advanced AI capabilities.

The Snapdragon X Series processors are equipped with a turbocharged neural processing unit (NPU) that can perform more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), making them ideal for AI-intensive processes like real-time translations and image generation .

The Copilot+ PCs are available in various models, including the Microsoft Surface Laptop, Dell Inspiron 14 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, HP OmniBook X 14, Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x, and DELL XPS 13.

Another feature for Copilot+ PCs powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series chips is AI Super Resolution, which leverages the onboard NPU to upscale resolution in supported games.

While these AI-powered capabilities are limited to the new Copilot+ hardware, the broader Windows 11 24H2 update includes several other enhancements. These include an improved context menu with clearer labels, support for Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, a scrollable quick settings menu, the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives directly in File Explorer, and the availability of the “sudo” command for elevated privileges. Windows 11 24H2 also introduces HDR background support to enhance the visual quality of the operating system.

Windows 11 24H2 Featrues

AI Explorer: A searchable memory function that allows users to search for past activities on their computer using natural language. It can access and organize information across apps, documents, photos, and webpages.
Live Captions with translation: Live captions will be able to translate spoken language in real-time.
Generative AI on device: Some generative AI features, like Copilot for text suggestions, will be able to run locally on devices with supported neural processing units (NPUs) for faster performance.
Copilot App: A new app that can be moved anywhere on the screen and uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. It allows users to share their screen and interact with the AI model using natural voice conversation. The app also includes a “Windows Context Copilot” plugin to capture content from any window and process the information, as well as a Power Automate Plugin to automate local tasks on Windows 11 .
AI Super Resolution (Copilot+ PC Exclusive): An AI-powered feature that uses the onboard NPU to upscale resolution in supported games. This feature is exclusive to Snapdragon X series PCs .
Improved Context Menu: The context menu will now include labels to easily identify what each button does, addressing user feedback .
Recall (Copilot+ PC Exclusive): A feature that captures screenshots and indexes their contents for later searches. This feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors .
Wi-Fi 7 Support: Windows 11 24H2 includes support for Wi-Fi 7, which promises faster and more reliable wireless connectivity.
Scrollable Quick Settings Menu: Users can now scroll through the quick settings menu to access more options.
7-Zip and TAR Archives in File Explorer: Users can create 7-zip and TAR archives directly in File Explorer.
“Sudo” Command: The “sudo” command is now available in Windows 11, allowing users to run commands with elevated privileges.
HDR Background Support: Windows 11 24H2 includes support for HDR backgrounds, enhancing the visual quality of the operating system.
Other Changes: The update includes various other improvements and bug fixes, such as a new Energy Saver mode, Windows Protected Print Mode, and enhanced testing tools for sound settings .

When will Windows 11 24H2 release?

The rollout of Windows 11 24H2 will happen in phases starting June 18, 2024 today. The phase 1 will be exclusive to the new Copilot+ PCs, which will ship with the update preloaded.

For regular Windows 11 users, the full 24H2 update is expected to be released in September 2024, but they will need to manually check for and install the update through Windows Update.

Microsoft has not provided a specific timeline for when the 24H2 update will be automatically pushed to all existing Windows 11 PCs, suggesting it may not happen until early 2025.
