Instagram Takes Steps to Label AI-Generated Content — Is Facebook, and Thread next?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the hottest topic right now. Many AI companies are popping up with some niche usages. AI photos have been around since DALL-E and Midjourney came around. However, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and AI-generated photos on social media. So Meta is taking a stand by requiring users to label their AI generated photos.
Instagram has begun prompting users to voluntarily label images created with artificial intelligence. This new feature aims to increase transparency and help users distinguish between AI-generated content and authentic photos on the popular social media platform.
Instagram added an option to label realistic looking AI photos or videos. While uploading a photo, you will see a toggle named “Label as made with AI” further stating that Instagram requires you to label certain realistic content made with AI.

However, slightly tweaked or enhanced photos with AI tools will pass. Instagram may also add it into their TOS if not labeled properly.
Regulators are also coming after AI companies to label AI generated content, especially images and videos, as they are getting increasingly indistinguishable.
This is particularly true for older generations, who may not be able to distinguish between an AI images vs. a real image.
Facebook feed is full of AI images at this point, and it’s only going to get worse.
Meta may be heading into the right direction, and we believe the Facebook feed and Threads feed should also be required to label AI content.
