Killed By Google? Gemini will forcefully disable Google Assistant if you try to use it

Google’s recent Pixel 9 series launch event showcased the company’s new product line, featured Android 15 changes, and the upcoming Google App upgrades. AI seemed like the highlights of the Keynote event with Gemini AI taking over everything including the core of Android OS and Pixel phones. Gemini is even forceful replacing Google Assistant on various Google products.

In our previous report, we showed you how to replace Google Assistant with Gemini. However, it wasn’t necessary to set Gemini as default assistant. Even with Google Assistant as default, you could still launch Gemini app. With the latest update, you now need to entirely replace Google Assistant with Gemini.

Once you launch the Gemini app, it will prompt you to switch to Gemini from Google Assistant. It won’t even let you access the Gemini app. Prior to this, you could use both the apps without switching. Gemini would still prompt, but wasn’t mandatory.

This is now a game changer as Google Assistant may slowly be killed by Google.

Switch to Gemini forces Google Asistant to disable

Is this the end of Google Assistant?

According to this report, Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on the newer Pixel phones, like the newly launched Pixel 9 series. This may soon be the case for older Pixel phones and other Google products.

I mean, we have already reported about this issue where Gemini AI is replacing Google Assistant without warning, here’s how to restore.

Looks like it is the beginning of the demise of a perfectly stable voice Assistant, as many Android users are reporting that Google Assistant is being replaced with Google Gemini automatically without any prompt.

Gemini is even coming to Nest Cameras and Google Home. It comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

Looks like Google Assistant will soon be in the Killed By Google graveyard list. There are over 296 apps and services killed by Google so far.

Google Gemini is not an Assistant yet

While Gemini is a powerful AI, it is not a good Assistant yet. This new AI can’t perform tasks that the Assistant traditionally handled with ease, such as playing music on Spotify, launching apps, change settings etc.

Gemini also can’t handle tasks like setting reminders, controlling smart home devices, and managing everyday queries. It is beyond Gemini’s current capabilities.

Gemini is rather good for search and finding information about a topic. Capturing the current screen and providing information on whatever is open on the screen.

For some, this replacement wasn’t something users opted into, or for some accidentally accepted the prompt to replace Google Assistant with Gemini.

If you are one of these users, and want to revert to Google Assistant, here is how to.
