Google Maps Updated With Live Speed and Speed Limit Globally Available for Android, iOS, Android Auto and CarPlay

Google Maps mobile app on Android and iPhone now displays live speed information during navigation. This is a long-awaited feature since Google announced it earlier this year for Android, iOS, CarPlay, and Android Auto. It was also featured in our previous report about the Google Maps’ with traffic reporting.
Google Maps will not show live speed alongside the speed limit for the route. It will also automatically change the speed limit for different locations. This new feature is being added slowly for Android, iOS, and CarPlay. As for Android Auto, it will most likely be released in the next update. So stay tuned.

I saw this feature last night on Android tablet while driving from another city. Another iPhone user posted about this with similar feature implemented on their iOS, possibly the new iOS 18 update. This feature has been taken from the popular Waze app.

Google Maps Speedometer Update
Google Maps’ latest update introduces a live speed indicator that appears on the screen during navigation. This feature provides real-time information about the user’s current speed, enhancing the overall navigation experience.
The speed display appears to be active only when a destination is set in the app. Without an active route, the speed indicator remains hidden.
The speed display is conveniently positioned on the navigation screen, allowing drivers to glance at their current speed without taking their eyes off the road for too long.
Speed limit available at all times means that the drivers are aware of it at all times. This is a welcome addition and adds value to a driver’s navigation experience and helps them stay aware of their speed without checking their car’s speedometer.
Some users have reported that the speed display updates quickly and accurately, though experiences may vary based on GPS signal strength and other factors.
Others have reported discrepancies between the displayed speed and their actual speed, with variations of 5-7 mph being mentioned. It’s worth noting that GPS-based speed measurements can sometimes be more accurate than a car’s speedometer, which often has a built-in margin of error.
Users familiar with similar features in apps like Waze have drawn comparisons, with some noting that Google Maps’ implementation feels more stable and less prone to flickering.
Availability
It appears that the live speed and speed limit feature was only available in select countries like the United States and Canada. The feature is rolling out globally starting today.
In addition to live speed display to Google Maps, you can also now benefit from a very useful feature which enables crowdsourcing traffic reports and incidences. Both Google Maps and Waze are making it easier to report incidents and helpful information including crash reports, lane closures, nearby construction, objects, stalled vehicle, and even mobile speed camera and police presence. Some users are already seeing this option available in their Maps.

How to enable Google Maps Live Speed and Speed Limit feature on Android and Android Auto?
While the Google Maps incidence reporting feature will be rolling out to Android, iOS, cars with Google Built-in, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, it is still a server side update. However, several users on Google Maps Beta version 11.144 or later are reportedly receiving this update.
